Marian Saunders

I’ve always loved crafts – knitting and embroidery were part of my life from an early age. My creativity was channelled elsewhere for a few decades as I tried out being a scientist and working for a multinational company. As the creative aspects of the job shrunk to into nothingness, I thought some maternity leave would be nice, albeit 9 years too late. So we ran away to Cornwall to live by the sea, buy a dog, go on long country walks and live the rural dream.

I guess it was inevitable that I should pick up my knitting needles again and think of bright colourful things to make. More unexpected was falling head over heels in love with polymer clay on first introduction. I was after a glitzy necklace to go with a summer dress and could find nothing suitable in the shops. I was trying to buy beads online when a Google search suggested a book on making my own from polymer clay. I just loved what I could see and paced the halls waiting for the book to arrive, a little stack of Fimo standing on my kitchen table ready and waiting. That was in 2007. I’ve learned such a lot from experimentation, courses and the generosity of fellow artists. There is still so much to learn and try.

I’ve recently merged my knitting with jewellery resulting in unique scarves and matching buttons and brooches. I love the idea of co-ordinating fabrics and jewellery and have made many necklaces to order picking up on an element of a fabric pattern.

So many ideas…. so little time!
